Continuing Education Offers Family Literacy Through CBET

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Community College District, Continuing Education in cooperation with San Diego Unified School District, operates the Community-Based English Tutoring Program (CBET). The state-funded program provides free adult English language instruction to parents and community members. Day and evening classes are offered, and free babysitting is available during class.

Lessons include stories and a wide range of multi-level activities that assist parents who are English language learners. Lessons are customized for the unique needs of parents participating in the classes. The goal is to teach the skills necessary to support a child in school, while providing targeted English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction.

CBET is one segment of the large ESL program offered through San Diego Continuing Education. Approximately 250 ESL instructors serve roughly 25,000 adult students each year at six campuses in

San Diego, and numerous off site locations in the community. At 47%, Mexico represents the largest nationality of ESL students; however the student population is diverse. At least 23 countries are represented with 100 or more students.

Beginning, intermediate, and advanced level ESL courses are available, plus special courses in conversation, pronunciation, and writing. Vocational English classes teach communication skills for the workplace, and TOEFL preparation classes are also offered. All CBET and ESL classes are free and you may enroll anytime.
